The Good Guys with Guns Part 1
By Patrick Hall
In my retirement years, I’ve spent much of my time reading the words of the Founding Fathers. You know, those dead racist, slave-owning, white guys that the cultural left, Progressive Liberal Democrats, and many of the Zinnian-prone educators on both college and secondary level seem to denigrate in their reductionist treatment of anything dealing with the history of the United States.
Howard Zinn's A People's History of the United States is one of the most destructive works in the revisionist historians’ arsenal. This work, adopted uncritically by the cultural left and introduced into our schools over the last thirty-plus years, has done more to promote a “piss and vinegar” view of our nation’s history among Liberal Progressives and the various constituencies that make up their ranks.
Revisionist historians who populated academia, especially in the 1970s, along with their baby-boomer descendants, are now firmly in control of what is taught but, more importantly, what is not taught in schools. They seldom cover the Jeffersons, Henrys, Madison, Adams, Hamilton’s, Franklins, and the Publius or Federalist Papers without the obligatory post-modern, post-colonial, and deconstructionist chatter. A chatter, in its diligence, has the nasty habit of seizing upon highly complex issues related to history, economics, culture, immigration, the military, and science and conveniently stuffing them into decanters labeled race, gender, class, as well as catechetical environmentalism. Their treatment of our Founding Fathers is, unfortunately, the very definition of “woke.” That is, they view and interpret our complex growth as a nation via a distorted lens of the oppressors over the oppressed. More specifically, it is a history of Whites oppressing various “peoples of color.” God, I despise that term!
Suppose one did not read, nor was exposed to, the primary writings of Washington, Adams, Paine, Jefferson, and others. In that case, it is no wonder that individuals who see themselves as our intellectual betters (many of them neo-socialist/globalist catechists) have a highly pejorative understanding of the people, documents, events, and struggles we had to negotiate as a nation, to have the freedoms and often unappreciated liberties, that exist today.
Once again, primary documentation about the Constitution is not covered in any meaningful manner, short of the “America is bad and irredeemable racist” prism that many individuals identified as Progressives or Liberal Democrats anchor themselves to. Instead, a synergistic mixture of cultural Marxist, neo-socialist-globalists, anti-American, anti-military, anti-religious, anti-Israel, pro-abortion, pro-gun control, catechetic environmentalism, and anti-capitalist rhetoric is lavishly dispensed by education institutions, the news media, and many within the Democrat and Republican Parties. This mixture is toxic because it is often done to exclude and ridicule opposing viewpoints.
Consequently, if you want a clear yet holistic perspective concerning our nation’s founding principles, universities are often the last place you would find them. It is vital, if not a categorical imperative, to begin reading the Constitution, the Federalist Papers, the writings of Jefferson, John Jay, Franklin, Washington, and others, and forego the revisionist minutiae touted as critical thinking by the cultural left and the Priesthood of Progressive Liberalism. Their faith statement has singlehandedly truncated intellectual freedom and true diversity of thought in many of our cultural institutions. Unfortunately, this same left-of-center, neo-socialist & globalist orientation is also making headway in the corporate cultures of Google, Meta, TikTok, YouTube, Pre-Musk Twitter, and other mega giants of social media.
Youthful Idiots and Gun Control
From Columbine High School to the mass shooting that occurred at a Christian Grade school in Nashville by a Transgender male has continued the pathology of sick individuals with guns carrying out their murderous psychosis on the rest of society. The mainstream Progressive Liberal Media (a redundancy in terms) has christened these “acts of gun violence.” This is always quickly followed by the call for more gun control and limiting firearms access. This, in turn, brings up in the hearts and minds of most Progressives the questionable validity of the Second Amendment and the abrogation of gun rights for millions of responsible gun owners.
In recent news broadcasts, young people, with prodding from individuals and the body politic that would like to amend, if not repeal, the Second Amendment has reached a frantic pitch. One is taken back to The March for Our Lives demonstrations after the Parkland School shootings. There, the overriding message was the ubiquitous call to eliminate “gun violence” by the restriction of gun ownership. Of course, the real targets of these protests are the millions of law-abiding gun owners, whom the previous Neo-socialist and Chief, Barrack Obama, once labeled people who cling to guns and religion with antipathy toward individuals not like them. Once more, they are those dastardly evil white Republicans, accompanied by “those despicable black faces of white supremacy such as myself.”
While these students’ hearts were in the right place, their concerns about school safety, the selling of assault weaponry (whatever the hell they are), and the requisite attack on that insidious evil known as the NRA will do little to either make schools and other public venues safer from crazies, criminals, and free-range Islamic terrorists. Democrats, and unfortunately, many Republican lawmakers, marching with these students and engaging in typical Progressive political theatre are the biggest hypocrites in all of this. Nancy Pelosi, Chuck Schumer, and others come to these rallies exceptionally well protected by their security details with “lots and lots of guns.”
After all, it is a fait accompli that good people with guns must protect politicians’ lives and that of their children while the rest of us are asked to disarm in “gun-free zones” or shelter and, in many cases, die in place. The ban on AR-15s and other weapons being wheeled by dysfunctional constituencies will do absolutely nothing to stop these events from occurring either now or in the future.
Sidebar: A pyrrhic victory of the Progressive Mental Health culture from the 1960s onward was the closing of hundreds of mental health institutions where many mentally unstable individuals were housed, despite the success of books and movies like “One Flew over the Cuckoo’s Nest,” which fed the deinstitutionalization movement among mental health professionals. Their actual victory led to a lot of mentally disabled being let loose in society. Halfway-houses and outpatient clinics have failed miserably in addressing the needs of the severely mentally ill, if not dangerous, individuals.
A hard truth is stirring us in the face. Good people with guns must stop bad people with guns. It is no accident that domestic crazies, to be distinguished from Jihadist free-range terrorists, never attack institutions or people who can protect themselves. The slaughter of over 1400 unarmed Israeli citizens by Hamas was a calculated murder spree. The terrorists knew where and what unarmed Kibbutz to target. In all of the mass murders perpetrated in our country, most criminals and even the mentally ill nut-jobs like in the Nashville shooter are not entirely detached from reality. They make self-preservation choices in initiating their murderous escapades, where they might encounter an armed citizen. In other words, they usually try to avoid the “good guys” with guns.
